Key Result Area 4: Improved Child Friendly spaces and safety

The Schools Against Crime (SAC) program, implemented by the YIDO in partnership with the Uganda Police Force (UPF), has significantly contributed to crime prevention and youth empowerment in schools and learning institutions across Uganda. Through SAC, hundreds of students have been sensitized on issues related to crime, drug abuse, violence, and the importance of good citizenship. The program has established functional crime prevention clubs in participating schools, fostering a culture of discipline, responsibility, and active community engagement among learners. Regular mentorship sessions by police officers and trained facilitators have improved the relationship between the police and young people, creating an environment where students view law enforcement as partners rather than adversaries.

Over time, SAC has yielded tangible outcomes, including a measurable reduction in cases of school violence, vandalism, and truancy in target institutions. The program’s peer-led model has empowered student leaders to take initiative in promoting peaceful conflict resolution and reporting criminal or suspicious activities. Furthermore, the collaboration between YIDO and UPF has strengthened school-community-police partnerships, ensuring sustainability of interventions even beyond the school setting. SAC continues to serve as a model initiative that demonstrates how strategic partnerships and proactive youth engagement can enhance security, promote civic responsibility, and prevent crime at the grassroots level.
